handbook p.2

Performances: Date, time, and location of performances will be announced well in advance, so that all members will have ample time to schedule around them. The major concerts for the year are posted on this website. If an emergency should arise, the student should contact the director or one of the officers as soon as possible before the performance. Absences not excused beforehand will be considered unexcused except in unavoidable circumstances. Severe illness and family emergencies will be considered excused absences. All other absences should be cleared with the director well in advance. Students who wish to be excused from a concert due to a conflict must submit an excuse in writing to the director.
Employers usually are understanding regarding missed work for performances, when it is explained that this is a required, graded school activity. (Be sure to give them plenty of notice). If problems arise with your employer due to chorus responsibilities, consult the director immediately. You should not be "stuck in the middle."
Officers may be relieved of their duties in the event of unexcused absences.
Students excused from performances will be given the opportunity to do an alternate assignment to make up the grade. See the director immediately for a Chorus Project form. Unexcused absences may be made up for a maximum of 70%.
All students are expected to be at all performances for their group. There is a distinction which must be made for grading purposes, however. School concerts and festivals, which are the culmination of the work we do in class, will be considered curricular. Community performances where we provide "entertainment" (PTSA, National Anthem, etc.) will be considered extra-curricular, and "extra-credit" for grading. Students are still expected to come, still expected to provide a written excuse if they cannot perform, but will not receive a grade penalty for failure to participate. Remember that whether it is graded or not, the chorus must be able to count on you. If we hold a voluntary program, and twenty sopranos and two altos show up, it is not going to work!

Concert dress: For formal concerts the men wear black tuxedos (provided by the chorus) with black socks, black dress shoes (not tennis shoes), black bow ties, and white wing collar shirts (provided by the students.) Ladies wear black evening gowns (provided by the chorus) with black closed-toed dress shoes and stockings (provided by the students.) Necklaces are optional. Avoid wearing jewelry that draws attention to you. Keep it simple. Be sure that your face is not obscured by your hair. Dresses and tuxes will be distributed prior to the first performance. They will be collected immediately following the final formal concert. We will dry clean them for you if you turn them in on time.

Concert etiquette: Be certain that your clothes are clean before performances. Do not wear perfume or cologne out of respect for those singers with allergies or asthma. Never spray aerosols where singers have to breathe. Remain quiet and attentive while other groups are performing. Remain until the entire concert is over. Politely request that your friends and family who attend also stay for the whole performance.

Attitude: Positive attitudes are contagious! Maintain your positive attitude. Strive to become a family of musicians. Only the most dedicated musicians working together can make the Alpharetta High School Chorus all that it can and should be. The time, energy, and effort that you invest will earn for you the rewards you deserve.
