handbook

Goals & Objectives: The Alpharetta High School Music Department provides students with a quality music education, which will enrich their understanding and enjoyment of music, as they gain a sense of responsibility to a performing ensemble.
This handbook has been prepared so that you will understand how we will accomplish our goals. Please sign and return the form on the back page indicating that you have read the information contained in this handbook, and will comply with it. Forms are also attached for membership in the choral association and for permission to participate in choral activities.

Possible Student Expenses:
I. Room & board for camp, All-State Chorus, trips.
II. $25 usage fee for tuxedos and dresses. This money is used for cleaning and replacement use.
III. Payment for lost or damaged music scores, folders, uniforms.
IV. Fees for participation in honor choruses, festivals, and workshops.
V. Tuxedo shirts and uniform accessories. Chorus polo shirts or T-shirts.
Students will have the opportunity to raise money to meet individual expenses through fundraisers and concession sales.
No student will be denied membership in any choral activity because of an inability to meet financial obligations. If you foresee any problem please consult the director for alternatives.

Rehearsal Standards:
The quality of education and performance is determined by the quality of rehearsal and class time. The following guidelines will ensure efficiency of class time:
When you enter the room, get your choral folder from the cabinet or your backpack. Place all other books and purses out of the way in the assigned area. Make sure you have a pencil! Go directly to your seat. Arrange your music in the order of rehearsal, if it is listed on the board. Warm-up exercises will begin promptly at the tardy bell.
Members are to remain in their assigned seats during rehearsals unless otherwise instructed by the director. At the end of rehearsal, replace your folder in the proper slot or take it home to practice, straighten chairs, and leave the room as you found it.
If you are ill and cannot participate fully in a rehearsal, be sure to ask the director for an alternate assignment before class. A sore throat does not prohibit learning. You will not be permitted to sit idle or study other material. Plan to make up for time missed by practicing extra after you regain your health.
Officers will be asked to aid the director in various capacities and should be given due respect by the membership.
The students may use the piano and other equipment with the director’s permission only. Students are not to be in the music office unless they have business with the director.
Chorus members are expected to behave as ladies and gentlemen at all times and to treat each other with mutual respect. Students gathered for choral functions at any time are governed by Alpharetta High School rules.

Extra Rehearsals: Section or full rehearsals may be called periodically. Attendance at these will be required. Students will be given two weeks notice, and in the case of section rehearsals, will be given some input in scheduling.
Students who wish to be excused from a rehearsal due to a conflict must submit an excuse in writing to the director.
An unexcused absence from a dress rehearsal may suspend the student from all or part of the performance. Excessive absences from class or extra rehearsals may result in the student’s suspension from the performance, at the director’s discretion.next page
